The inter-disciplinary team comprises of two Medical Consultants - Dr Angus Graham, Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine and Dr John Holloway, Consultant in Neuropsychiatry, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Clinical Psychologist, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Nursing Staff, Rehab Technicians and Rehab Assistants, Activity Co-ordinators and Discharge Liaison Co-ordinator.
The majority of our patients are admitted from an acute hospital following surgery and stabilisation of their brain injury - and on average patients stay with us for 3 - 5 months. We admit patients with tracheostomies, nasogastric tubes, PEG's and patients in low staes of arousal.
We are a Level 1 specialist service and complete the full set of Outcome measure for the UKROC data base.

Our average length of stay is 3 - 5 months, although we have patients for shorter periods of rehab and some very complex patients for a considerably longer period of rehabilitation.

Medically stable, but low awareness or response persists beyond eg 3 weeks after sedation withdrawn, ICP corrected and medically stable. Able to benefit from medical and physical therapy to prevent complications and support recovery.

Assessment/active rehabilitation phase which needs to be distinguished from long term care, although planning care increasingly important aim after some (eg 6) months. Patients may go to active participation unit if they improve sufficiently.

The Frenchay Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre is a 24 bedded, modern Centre situated on the Frenchay Hospital site in Bristol. The Centre provides specialist intensive in-patient rehabilitation for adults and adolescents (16 years upwards) with a traumatic or acquired brain injury. We treat patients with highly complex physical and cognitive impairments, challenging behaviours and neuropsychiatric disorders resulting from a brain injury. We also admit patients detained under the Mental Health Act.
